Mānoa Press

Established in 1986.

Mānoa Press began in my mother's garage in Lakewood, California. I built my own press, got some type at the local foundry and set off to make books by hand. Over the years I have made more than two dozen of them, most all on paper I've made and bound with silk and leather and marbled papers.

Over the years, Mānoa Press has become a vehicle for the print-on-demand books I make. Sure, the type and the ink is still here, and set pages lie waiting to be printed, but my focus has largely turned to the digital world.

Mānoa Press is a private press, publishing only my own creative efforts.

I carved the logo above out of linoleum in 1982. My intention was to use it for my handmade paper. Now I use it for Mānoa Press. The image is a breadfruit tree. In Hawaiian, the breadfruit is ulu, which also means ‘to grow.’
